Night vision devices (NVDs) were originally developed by the United States Army as a tactical advantage tool to be used during warfare. I’m sure you can imagine how valuable it is to have the ability to spot enemies in the dark.
Different types of night vision devices include the focus of today’s article, the monocular, as well as binoculars, goggles, glasses and cameras.
These days, night vision devices aren’t limited to military usage and are used in many different applications, for example law enforcement and civilians. Let’s take a look at some of them.

The release of their Nightfall II was well-received and continues to find its way into the arsenal of many people thanks to its great design, features, durability and, of course, its affordable cost.
Weighing in at 15.2oz with dimensions of 205 x 95 x 60 mm, this device is compact and easy to carry in backpacks or by hand making it a breeze to transport, use & store.
Black in color, the Nightfall II boasts a fully weather-resistant, easy-grip ergonomic design so that you can use your monocular comfortably in all conditions.
Thanks to its compact design and lightweight properties you’ll never have to worry about this device weighing you down. The high-quality rubber exterior does a good job of ensuring that the device is durable.
Gen 1 NV Technology
The Nightfall II night vision monocular features Gen 1 technology. Night vision devices that feature Gen 1 technology are the most frequently purchased as they are much less expensive than devices with Gen 2 & Gen 3 technology.
The Firefield Nightfall FF24066 uses Gen 1 technology to produce images of dark areas that you would otherwise be unable to see. While the image that’s produced is somewhat grainy, you’re still provided with the ability to see some details in the dark. This is invaluable in some scenarios.
Viewing Distance, Resolution and Magnification
The Firefield Nightfall FF24066 has a viewing distance of up to 200 meters with 15° field of view, but its focus is primarily that of close focus range. If a long viewing distance is a must have, you’ll need to consider a different monocular.
As is the case with almost all Gen 1 NV devices, the Firefield Nightfall FF24066 possesses a resolution of 36mm per line. While not the highest resolution on the market, this resolution will suit the needs of most. The Nightfall II possesses a 5x magnification.
While the built-in Pulse infrared illumination is necessary for most NV devices, this feature significantly reduces battery life. Regardless of the power consumption, it is a must-have for many hunters.
The Firefield Nightfall FF24066 has an IR wavelength of 805 nm while its intensity measures at 75mW. This will be a handy feature considering the magnification is so high.
Two AA batteries are required to operate the Firefield Nightfall FF24066. When the Firefield Nightfall FF24066 is used with infrared illuminator, you can expect the battery to last 20 hours. Without IR it will last up to 72 hours.
Please bear in mind that these batteries are not included and will need to be purchased separately. You can purchase these batteries almost anywhere.
What’s the warranty on the Firefield Nightfall FF24066?
The Firefield Nightfall FF24066 is covered under warranty for a period of 3-years. And if you register your product within 30 days of purchase, your warranty extends to a 5-year period.
What are the mounting options of the Nightfall II?
On the underside of the Firefield Nightfall FF24066 you’ll find a threaded tripod mount, although many people have no need for this. Its compact build and light weight mean that it’s comfortable enough to carry it for long periods of time.
What’s included with my purchase?
Included in your purchase of the Firefield Nightfall FF24066 is a hand strap, carrying case, cleaning cloth, objective lens cap, the user manual and your warranty card.
Can the Nightfall II be used during daytime?
Generation 1 night vision devices characteristically can’t be used during the day. Bright lights and direct exposure to sunlight can damage the device, so it’s not recommended to use them during the day. If you need to make use of the Firefield Nightfall FF24066 during the day, make sure to keep the lens cap on and look through the pin hole of the cap in bright conditions.
For the price you pay, the Firefield Nightfall FF24066 is a product that ticks most of the necessary boxes that a night vision monocular should.
It’s evident that a lot of thought went into its ergonomic design, which is why it stands out from the rest. Finishing touches like the built-in infrared illuminator, decent viewing capabilities and its massively attractive price solidify this is a firm favorite on the market.
